How the Institute Works

June 22 – 26, 2009

The Summer Technology Institute is a week-long experience that can be taken for either 3 graduate credits or 4.5 continuing education credits (CEUs). During the week participants immerse themselves in using technology to enhance teaching and learning.

Each morning participants attend the same Topic Strand. The goal is to allow a deeper understanding on a topic you choose. This year the morning strands are:

  • Web Development in the 21st Century – Advanced (Jason Baack)
  • Online Learning Environments — Moodle and StudyWiz (Ann Marie Quirion Hutton)
  • Using Virtual Worlds for Teaching and Learning – Advanced (Tim Hart)
  • Engage, Motivate, and Empower Your Students Through Digital Media (Laura Richter)
  • Novice Strand: (Bethany Hanson)

Afternoon workshop sessions provide an opportunity for participants to understand how different teaching and learning strategies can incorporate current technologies.

Description and Requirements

Passing grades for the Institute will be issued by the end of July; final grade will be posted after the final project has been turned by the end of November. The graduate school no longer sends grades out, however, you may request it by calling 207-581-TEST or UM Student Records web page. Final grades will be sent to the graduate school after your project has been completed and has been accepted by your Strand Leader.

Although the Summer Technology Institute carries graduate credit, students should check with their advisors in advance to verify that this Technology Institute may be accepted for their Program of Study.

Students enrolling for 3 Graduate Credits are required to:

  • Work for 40 contact hours with instructors in concentrated settings that focus on technology integration into the curriculum (5 days)
  • Meet with instructors to discuss the creation of an action plan for the coming school year. Plans will include a philosophy for using technology, an overview of a “big understanding” learning project that will use technology, and the design of specific technological templates and applications to be used as part of the project.
  • Present their plan for implementing a learning project using technology in their own classrooms or school. Participants may work with others in a team approach to their action plan. The Action Plan will include one or more of the following:
    • Technology embedded into student activities
    • Technology integration to deliver instruction
    • Technology Induction to help prepare materials
  • Respond to the Institute readings by the end of August. You may order these textbooks from the University of Maine Bookstore: 207-581-1700 or you may obtain them on your own. (Further details will be provided by your Strand Leader.)
    • Palfrey, John., Gasser, Urs., (2008) Born Digital: Understanding the First Generation of Digital Natives. Basic Books.
    • Tapscott, Don. (2008). Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything. Portfolio.
    • An anthropological introduction to YouTube
  • Grad Students are required to provide monthly updates to their Strand Leaders
  • Final report in the fall, (November 30, 2009) which will detail progress and/or results of action plan.

Many participants choose to take the Institute for CEUs, and these students are not responsible for article reviews or final projects. However, they will be expected to turn in an educational teaching plan at the end of the week for how they hope to use their new knowledge.
